About the role:
The Technical Officer – Rural Development provides specialist technical advice on irrigation and drainage requirements for subdivisions and developments within Lower Murray Water’s (LMW) rural service area.
You will play a key role in ensuring LMW meets its statutory obligations by preparing written responses, condition letters and referrals, conducting investigations and inspections, and supporting planning and development activities. This role works closely with developers, councils, consultants and internal stakeholders to deliver consistent, high‑quality customer outcomes that align with planning frameworks and environmental obligations.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide technical advice and support on irrigation and drainage requirements for subdivisions and developments.
- Investigate development proposals and prepare written reports and condition letters outlining LMW’s technical requirements.
- Coordinate and prepare statutory referral responses to meet planning and development approval obligations.
- Undertake asset location investigations, easement enquiries and field inspections, including acceptance of works.
- Prepare and coordinate the annual submission for properties being excised from Rural Irrigation Districts.
- Monitor subdivision progress, risks and compliance, ensuring records, reports and documentation are accurate and up to date.
- Work collaboratively with the Rural Services team and other internal departments to resolve customer enquiries and service requests.
- Contribute to the review and improvement of systems, processes and procedures to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency.
About you:
We’re looking for technical people who have the following or the enthusiasm to learn and grow a career in the rural water industry:
- Experience or knowledge of the water supply, irrigation or civil construction and/or statutory and development processes.
- A solid understanding of engineering principles.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
- Experience using business systems such as GIS and CRM to support planning and monitoring activities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing clear, accurate reports and technical correspondence.
- A customer‑focused approach with the ability to build positive relationships with developers, consultants, councils and other stakeholders.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- An understanding of the Victorian water entitlement framework (desirable).
