About the role:
The Hydraulics Engineer / Technical Officer is an integral part of the Rural Services team, providing hydraulic engineering advice, irrigation design assessments, and technical support to internal and external customers.
Working collaboratively across the organisation and with customers and stakeholders, this role contributes to the effective operation and utilisation of delivery systems across LMW’s irrigation and drainage networks, ensuring high standards of service, safety, and regulatory compliance.
This is a dual-banded role (Band 4–5), with the level of appointment determined based on the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and capability.
At the Band 5 level, the role operates with greater independence and technical authority, applying advanced engineering judgement, delivering more complex assessments, and contributing to engineering standards, operational improvements, and technical decision-making.
Candidates appointed at Band 4 will have access to ongoing development opportunities to build their skills and capability over time.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide hydraulic advice and technical assessments to internal and external customers
- Support irrigation and drainage design and operational decision-making
- Identify, assess and help manage operational risks through planning, analysis and monitoring
- Apply engineering judgement to inform service outcomes and system performance
- Build and maintain positive relationships with customers, stakeholders and the community
- Represent LMW in relevant industry forums, advisory groups and committees
- Contribute to continuous improvement of processes, systems and documentation
- Comply with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the role
About you:
We’re looking for technical people who have the following or the enthusiasm to learn and grow a career in the rural water industry:
At Band 4, you may bring:
- Qualifications in civil engineering or equivalent experience
- Developing experience in hydraulics, irrigation or a related field
- Ability to apply technical knowledge to support customer-focused outcomes
- Strong communication and report writing skills
- A willingness to learn and grow technical capability
At Band 5, you will bring:
- Proven experience in hydraulics and irrigation systems
- Strong practical knowledge in water supply, drainage and land management
- Ability to apply advanced technical judgement in complex or non-routine situations
- Experience providing evidence-based advice and influencing outcomes
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and ability to work independently
What we’re looking for:
- Ability to collaborate across the business and with external stakeholders
- Experience with customer systems, databases and GIS (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies and engineering standards
- Certified Irrigation Designer qualification, or willingness to obtain
- Understanding of the Victorian water entitlement framework (desirable)
