Securing Victoria's water supplies

waterMAP Program

The Victorian Government's waterMAP program seeks to improve the water efficiency of major water using commercial, industrial and institutional customers.

What is a waterMAP?

A waterMAP is a "Water Management Action Plan".  It is a plan to use water more efficiently by identifying water saving actions that can be implemented at a specific site.

Who will need to complete a waterMAP?

The following Lower Murray Water customers will be required to complete a waterMAP:

  • Existing non-residential customers who:
    • currently use 10 million litres or more potable water per annum
    • are likely to use 10 million litres or more potable water per annum in the future
  • New non-residential customers LMW expects are likely to use 10 million litres or more potable water per annum

Is a waterMAP mandatory?

Yes, for commercial industrial and institutional customers as shown above. WaterMAPs are part of Victorian water corporations' Permanent Water Savings Rules; and they are required regardless of the level of restrictions that may be in place at a given time.  If your site has already developed a plan under another program (eg: Save Water Efficiency Service; Water Conservation Solutions Program; Sustainable Water Use Plans for local government; Resource Management Plans relating to Trade Waste etc), they may be acceptable as your waterMAP.  Please see advice from Lower Murray Water.

How will preparing a waterMAP assist your organisation?

A waterMAP will benefit your organisation by assisting to:

  • Assess your current water usage
  • identify inefficiencies and areas for potential water savings
  • create an action plan to implement water conservation methods
  • create a framework to annually review and report on water conservation actions
  • saving water will save money!

Key dates

  • Annual report lodged with LMW - 31st March 2009

Annual Reporting

Once you have submitted a WaterMAP an annual report will be required after the end of the next financial year.  This report is required regardless of how much water you have used.  i.e. even if your usage has fallen below 10Ml.  The templates for this reporting are available in your WaterMAP handbook, or can be downloaded from the left hand side of this page.
